According to the Business Software Alliance, 21% of the software being used in the United States today is illegitimate. That’s why Microsoft’s latest efforts to wipe out piracy are focused on system builders who load unlicensed copies of Windows operating systems and Office software. “Hard disk loaders” obtain illicit licensing keys and sell the computers loaded with fraudulent software at reduced prices. This practice not only undermines legitimate retailers, causing them to lose business to people selling pirated software on computers, it also prevents buyers from receiving security updates and could jeopardize their computer security through the use of potentially tampered code.
Microsoft realizes that companies selling counterfeit software or hard disk loaded systems make competing difficult for you and other honest companies. That’s why we won’t hesitate to take legal action against people who do it. This month alone, 23 lawsuits have been brought against individuals and companies in Florida and California, making the total number of cases filed in the past year over 120.
