According to the Business Software Alliance, 21% of the software being used in the United States today is illegitimate. That’s why Microsoft’s latest efforts to wipe out piracy are focused on system builders who load unlicensed copies of Windows operating systems and Office software. “Hard disk loaders” obtain illicit licensing keys and sell the computers loaded with fraudulent software at reduced prices. This practice not only undermines legitimate retailers, causing them to lose business to people selling pirated software on computers, it also prevents buyers from receiving security updates and could jeopardize their computer security through the use of potentially tampered code.

Microsoft realizes that companies selling counterfeit software or hard disk loaded systems make competing difficult for you and other honest companies. That’s why we won’t hesitate to take legal action against people who do it. This month alone, 23 lawsuits have been brought against individuals and companies in Florida and California, making the total number of cases filed in the past year over 120.

Stronger security that reduces risk and eases compliance.

Large organizations spend 1–5 percent of their total IT budget on security. Where does that money go? For one, defending against the top-three causes of data loss: viruses, denial of service, and theft of proprietary information. The threats and consequences are real. Recently, a lost, unprotected laptop in Berkeley exposed 98,000 social security numbers and personal records of graduate students. Microsoft® Windows Vista reduces business risk by protecting data, minimizing attack surface, and providing robust reporting and auditing tools.

An infrastructure that takes less time to deploy and manage.

Today, a large organization typically manages hundreds of operating system images at a cost of up $100,000 per year, per image. Deployment and user migration alone take up to seven hours per PC. Total cost of ownership per desktop can easily escalate to $5,520 per PC, per year. Windows Vista provides a more secure, manageable, and reliable desktop, so your people can spend less time deploying and maintaining infrastructure.

New ways to manage information that help people get more done.

Up to 80 percent of digital information can be found on workers’ individual hard drives and in their fi les. It can cost up to $18,000 per year, per employee in lost productivity when workers can’t find files and have to re-create them. Windows Vista helps put that money back in your pocket by giving people ways to quickly and easily find and organize the information they need to do their jobs.

Businesses are increasingly on the move. Employees need access to all of their messaging data anywhere they happen to be - on the road, at home, or in the office. Companies that provide this anywhere access can lower expenses, increase efficiency, and provide their employees with the tools they need to excel at their jobs.

Messaging data used to mean e-mail messages. Now, it means e-mail, calendar, contact and task items, faxes, and voice mail messages. Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 provides access to all of these types of messages in one centralized location - the user’s mailbox. Through a suite of new and enhanced features, you can now access all types of messages from anywhere: the office, your home, the airport, the ballpark, or the local coffee shop.

In order to provide this anywhere access to your messaging data, Exchange 2007 relies on several different server roles. A server role is a predefined set of features that can be installed on an Exchange 2007 server. You can install multiple server roles on the same physical server.
